The Pequot Running Club
Your Running and Walking Community in Fairfield County.
More Than Miles: Our Story
Welcome to Pequot Runners, Fairfield County's home for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. For over four decades, we've been more than just a club; we're a community built on the shared joy of movement, friendship, and giving back.
A Tradition of Running & Community
Founded in 1976, Pequot Runners began as a small group of friends, led by our founder Packer Wilbur, who met on weekends to explore the scenic roads of Southport and Fairfield. Their goal was simple: to share their passion for running and encourage others to join them.
That simple goal quickly grew into a local tradition. In the fall of that first year, the club hosted a small Thanksgiving Day race to celebrate their season. That race, now the Pequot Runners Thanksgiving Day 5-Mile Race & Walk, has become a cornerstone of the Fairfield community, drawing thousands of participants and raising critical funds for local charities each year.
Our name pays homage to the rich history of our home, rooting our modern community in the heritage of the land we are so fortunate to run on every day.
Who We Are Today
Today, Pequot Runners is a vibrant and diverse group of members. You’ll find competitive marathoners running alongside people training for their first 5K, groups of friends enjoying a social jog, and dedicated walkers who are an essential part of our club.
Our philosophy is simple: if you like to move, you belong here. Our weekly group runs are the heart of our club, offering a welcoming, non-intimidating environment where every pace is celebrated. The conversation and coffee after the run are just as important as the miles logged.
Running for a Reason
We believe that running has the power to strengthen not only our bodies and minds, but also our community. Through our annual Thanksgiving Day Race, our members, volunteers, and sponsors have raised over a million dollars for local non-profits.
Our charitable efforts support a wide range of causes right here in our backyard, including youth development programs, health and human services, local shelters, and much more. When you run with Pequot Runners, you're helping us make a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors.
